Police sergeant in Louisiana dies from coronavirus, spokesperson says

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WDSU) –

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office sergeant has died from complications due to the coronavirus, the office announced Saturday.

The JPSO said 68-year-old Alvis “Al” West III was a sergeant assigned to the Fourth District.

His family released a statement, saying: “We are heartbroken by the loss of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a wonderful man who touched the heart of all who met him. Please respect our need for privacy in this difficult time.”

West was a 32-year veteran of JPSO.

As of Saturday, there are 3,008 cases of COVID-19 in Jefferson Parish and 95 deaths.

Louisiana has reported 12,496 cases with 409 total deaths.
