BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — U.S. Postal Inspector Silvia Torres said while we wait eagerly to get packages during the holiday season, potential thieves are looking for the chance to Grinch up the festivities by swiping unattended boxes.

“The postal service delivers to millions of addresses, and they deliver billions of pieces of mail throughout the year. And certainly, during this time, that number increases, so the opportunities increase,” Torres said.

That’s more chances for porch pirates to try to get their hands on your orders.

Capital One Shopping reported over $29 billion was lost due to package theft in 2022, and the average stolen package was worth $112.30.

Torres says don’t procrastinate on filing a theft report.

“They should immediately report it. They can report it to their local police and to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service,” Torres said.

“It helps if someone has video images of a theft in action. Save the video and provide it to the postal inspection service,” she said.
