KENNER, La. (WDSU) —

A New Orleans woman, who was in the late stage of her pregnancy, was killed Thursday in a two-car crash Thursday in an area of Kenner, officials said.

The crashes were reported around 12:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of West Esplanade Avenue near the intersection with Lake Trail.

According to police, two cars were headed east on West Esplanade Avenue when the one in front swerved off the roadway and struck a power pole, killing the driver, identified as Jade Lewis, 22.

Kenner police identified Lewis in an update Thursday afternoon. Police confirmed that Lewis’ unborn child also did not survive.

The second vehicle, behind the first that Lewis was driving, lost control and struck another power pole at the intersection, cutting the power pole in half, police said.

The second driver received treatment at the scene, but it’s unclear if that person was taken to a hospital.

No other passengers were in the vehicles when the crashes happened.

Kenner police said the crashes are under investigation, but that road rage is being considered as a factor.

A spokesperson for the police department said criminal charges could follow.
