BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Authorities were called to the scene of a middle school in Baton Rouge on Monday morning when a student became ill after consuming a drug-laced candy.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office says its School Drug Task Force was sent to Southeast Middle School after they were alerted that four students had taken THC gummies.

First responders brought one of the students to the hospital out of an abundance of caution and confirmed that the child was in stable condition.

EBRSO says a 12-year-old sixth grader brought the gummies to school and when three other sixth graders allegedly asked for some, the child shared the candies.

According to deputies, the student was booked into Juvenile Detention for distribution of schedule I, violation of a controlled dangerous substance in a school zone and possession of marijuana.

Deputies say the three other students were issued a summons for possession of contraband on school property and released to their parents.

Their investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

“This investigation is ongoing, and disciplinary action for the students is being enforced based on the district’s policies and procedures,” a statement from East Baton Rouge Parish School Systems said. “EBRPSS is committed to taking swift and decisive action to protect students and ensure their safety.”
