Proposed housing development in WBR Parish raising public concerns

West Baton Rouge Parish

BRUSLY, La. (BRPROUD) – Could more homes be on the way to West Baton Rouge Parish?

The West Baton Rouge Planning Commission is holding a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9.

One of the items which is currently on the agenda is the “Preliminary Plat for Proposed Keystone West.”

The new development would add 317 homes to Back Brusly.

Ahead of the meeting, some local constituents are voicing their concerns about the possible addition of homes in West Baton Rouge Parish.

A list of those concerns can be found below:

  • Currently as you know, just west of Lukeville Extension, there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of residents that, at this time, have only one way in or out of our area. What will adding 600 more residents in this one area do to this situation?
  • Every single day we struggle with water pressure. We’ve heard “you’re at the end of the line” too many times to count. What will adding 600 more residents do to this?
  • Choctaw Road is dangerously narrow.
  • Have you heard of “Dead Man’s Curve”? That’s where the proposed entrance to Keystone West will be. In my four years of residing in District II, I’ve lost count of how many vehicles have missed this turn (including a fatality).
  • Sugar Mill (5 short years ago – cost $125/sq foot to build. Once DSLD came in and purchased all the vacant lots, home values diminished to $85/sq foot (in two short years). What will 317 more rooftops with lower value homes on it do to our values? We all know that answer.
  • Our current school bus system does not support what we have now – hence the reason hundreds of cars line up in carpool. What will adding 600 more residents in this area do to this situation?
  • Drainage – I believe our parish has some of the best drainage and I’d like to see it stay that way. Rerouting a natural drainage like the one that runs through the current property is risky!

A concerned citizen had this to say about the possibility of additional homes in West Baton Rouge Parish:

Developers are submitting proposed plans to the council to drop 317 new homes on the golf course property off of Choctaw Rd. (basically another Sugar Mill, but smaller). Lots ranging from 60-70 feet wide with one entry and exit on Choctaw Rd. The current entrance to the golf course will be closed off and has been purchased by a private owner. Drainage concerns have already been raised to the council. This will put around 600 more vehicles on Choctaw Rd., at the red lights on Main, St. Francis or Lukeville.

It is important to note that this still a proposed plan and that the land for these homes has not been purchased as of Monday, October 25.
