Protesters to ‘March in Action’ for survivors of alleged sexual assault at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The head of Department of French Studies at LSU is no longer chair of the department.

This after multiple women filed a lawsuit against LSU claiming little was done to “address allegations of sexual harassment and assault against a French graduate student.”

In response to the lawsuit, a march is planned on Monday afternoon at LSU.

Organizers say, “This march is specifically in response to the most recent title IX lawsuit filed against the university and LSU’s French department.”

Details about the “March in Action” protest including when it starts can be found below:

A faculty member provided this statement about Monday’s march:

When USA Today broke the story about LSU athletics, a couple years ago, the shockwaves created a huge scandal that continue to ripple across campus. This past weekend, Ed Orgeron was fired for coaching a losing football team – not for his part in covering up rape.

Today’s protest was organized in response to the egregious mishandling of numerous women’s complaints of sexual violence and harassment at LSU. The former chair of the department of French studies routinely defended and promoted a sexual predator despite multiple students’ coming forward with complaints of physical assault and sexual harassment. Somehow, when it happens in the athletics department, we kind of say “well, yeah, that’s football.” But nobody says “well, yeah, that’s French literature.” Nobody except Dr. Russo herself, who dismissed the complaints as “compliments” and “cultural differences.” So today’s protest is about holding LSU accountable. Not just athletics, not just French Studies, but all representatives and units on campus charged with ensuring our students’ college experience is safe, that they are treated with dignity and respect, and that the people in charge will no longer support or outright endorse rape culture.”

This march is put together by the LSU Feminists in Action.
