BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A deputy with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office recently attempted a traffic stop on Boardwalk Dr.

Kaleb Derozan, 23, of Baton Rouge was driving the rental car and Kristen Bellew, 19, of Walker was a passenger.

The traffic stop was requested because neither occupant of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop and a brief pursuit ensued on S Sherwood Forest Blvd. and Mead Rd.

The pursuit ended at the Willowbend Lake Apartments.

When Derozan came to a stop, both occupants jumped out and ran from the vehicle.

The 23-year-old was captured soon after by the responding deputy.

Derozan was detained and two other deputies found Bellew hiding behind one of the apartment buildings.

When the 19-year-old was taken into custody, deputies found “a small clear plastic baggie containing 1.7 grams of suspected heroin,” according to the affidavit.

Bellew was detained as well and a field test showed that heroin was indeed in the baggie.

A search of the rental car ensued and “another clear plastic baggie containing 4.2 grams of suspected fentanyl could be seen in the center console in front of the gearshift,” according to the affidavit.

Another field test was administered which showed that it was fentanyl in the plastic baggie.

The Baton Rouge man was interviewed by deputies.

The affidavit states that during that interview, Derozan claimed that he did not stop because “Bellew told him not to stop.”

Derozan also stated that the car was borrowed from a “dope dealer” and they were headed to the Oyo Hotel.

The 23-year-old admitted that he knew fentanyl “was in the vehicle when he got in it,” according to the affidavit.

During her interview, Bellew said that she paid Derozan to take her to Walker.

Bellew claimed that Derozan gave her the heroin which was found at the apartment complex.

The duo from Louisiana was subsequently arrested and their charges are listed below:
