BOGALUSA, La. (BRPROUD) – As the Bogalusa Fire Department says, “It’s definitely that time of year.”
There are a lot of nonvenomous snakes in Louisiana.
The attached photo from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries shows how many more nonvenomous snakes there are compared to venomous.
There are six snakes that you should keep an eye out for and one of them has evidently been seen a lot lately.
BFD says, “there have been several reports of venomous copperhead snakes moving about.”
When making your way through a wooded area or backyard, the Bogalusa Fire Department reminds people to pay particular attention to places where snakes like to hide.
BFD highlights these examples of places to look out for:
- Children’s toys
- Power wheels
- Wood piles
- Brush piles
- Trash cans
- Lawn mowers
The Bogalusa Fire Department advises that if by some unfortunate circumstance you end up getting bit from a venomous snake, “try to get a photo of the snake to bring to the hospital.”
Do not try to make contact with the snake after an attack.
