Runnels Elementary announces D.A.R.E. essay winners

Runnels Elementary School’s fifth-grade class, which is composed of 40 students, celebrated its completion of the D.A.R.E. course, and D.A.R.E. essay winners were announced at the school’s D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony on Friday.

The winner of the D.A.R.E. essay contest was Andrew Hart. Dana Badawi took second place in the contest, and Derek Houk placed third.

Andrew, who is eligible to move forward in the competition, received the D.A.R.E. essay medal. The other finalists received award certificates and gifts.

Fifth-grader Emma Smith received a special award for having good character.

D.A.R.E. Instructor Cpl. Amie Genola of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office hosted the graduation ceremony for the 18-week D.A.R.E. program.
