Safety measures in place at 13th Gate

Waiting in a long line to be greeted by bloody hands, the 13th Gate is designed to entertain.

“We have 13th scenes to the house we start here at the elevators and you go on through to complete terror and doom and we just try to scare the pants off of you.”

Blake Hockaday has several roles in the house. He said, the most important is safety.

“We have a lot of help from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Department. We have walkies, making sure everybody going through safely and there’s no problems going on” said Hockaday, a staff member with 13thGate.

As brave people make their way through one of the top ranked haunted houses in the nation. Hockaday said, along with scares behind the doors, there’s help.

“Behind each scene, there are different ways we can get in and out of the scenes to get people in and out safely.”

Behind the scenes, the scares are just chatter between a group of people who consider themselves close knit.

“You ask why I’m still here, it’s fun and it’s a family thing.

Head of make-up Blain Quam is in his twentieth season, for him, he doesn’t see himself doing anything else.

“I don’t even know now what I would do, if I didn’t do this” said Quam.

Now with safety and makeup covered, the team said, they just want you to come out and enjoy.

“We just want them to leave out of here pleased with all the effort and work that we put into this haunted house each season.”
