Scripps National Spelling Bee winner enjoys drive-by parade in hometown

HARVEY, La. (BRPROUD/NBC Newschannel) – The hometown of Zaila Avant-Garde held a drive-by parade for the most recent Scripps National Spelling Bee winner.

There were cars, signs, horses and people in costumes that all came out to honor the 14-year-old.

Avant-Garde is the first African-American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“Murraya,” was the word which clinched the spelling bee for Avant-Garde.

In 2020, Avant-Garde won the Kaplan Online Spelling Bee and took home a $10,000 prize.

Did you know that Avant-Garde is also a Guinness World Record holder?

This weekend’s celebration was not the first for the 14-year-old prodigy.
