Southern University alumna earns Ship Handler of the Year award

Southern University alumna Monique Jefferson has been awarded the Ship Handler of the Year award.

The award is given to Surface Warfare Officers who demonstrate superior performance onboard the Navy’s newest platform, the Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship.

A native of Katy, TX, Jefferson received her commission from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. Her qualifications include Surface Warfare Officer of the Deck, and Anti-Terrorism Tactical Watch Officer. Surface Warfare Officers are Naval officers whose primary duties focus on operation of Navy ships at sea. These officers are stationed across the world.

Jefferson recently completed a seven-month deployment in the Persian Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean Ocean. She was stationed onboard the USS James E. Williams (DDG 95). Jefferson is currently the Weapons Officer onboard the USS Indianapolis.
