BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) The St. Amant Gator Band took the field Sunday night at the Saints vs. Cowboys game at the Mercedes Benz Superdome.
“It’s the culmination of everything we have worked for in the last few years,” St. Amant Director of Bands Craig Millet said.
Millet says the band lost $250,000 worth of instruments and equipment in the flood of 2016, since then they have been working to get back on their feet. The Saints game performance, a landmark for the band and a symbol of their recovery.
The long road to this moment began after Millet posted their story on social media, and was recognized by the Saints, Sports Illustrated, and the United Way Chapter of Baton Rouge. Their donations, from all over the country totaled at $83,000. “It was a tremendous help getting us back on our feet,” Millet said.
“It was a godsend, there was so much uncertainty we didn’t know what was going to happen,” Millet said.
Sunday night’s halftime show fittingly Louisiana themed, featured the Louisiana state song “You Are My Sunshine,” and guest star PJ Morton of Maroon 5.
“We are all very much thrilled at this opportunity and it’s giving us a chance to show the world and the rest of the country that we can recover and we have a story that needs to be told,” St. Amant Band Member Matthew Norris said.
