BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – All local fire departments responded to a Thursday afternoon blaze in St. Gabriel, authorities said.

It was shortly before noon when the City of St. Gabriel reported that the St. George Fire Department was leading a response to a commercial fire on the corner of Highway 74 and Railroad Street.

As of 2 p.m., city officials say the fire has been extinguished and Entergy crews are working to restore power in the area.

Local residents had been temporarily evacuated due to the threat of smoke and through traffic on Hwy 74 was closed for a while. Drivers were asked to use Hwy 75 past East Iberville School.

St. George firefighters were joined by first responders with the Baton Rouge Fire Department, Prairieville Fire Department, and Geismar Fire Department.

St. George Fire spoke with BRProud Thursday afternoon, describing the blaze as “large” and confirming that it did not result in any injuries.

St. George added, “We have two engines, a ladder, a squad, and a tanker on scene with Baton Rouge Fire department, Prairieville Fire Department, and Geismar Fire Department. There are no reported injuries at this time. The cause has yet to be determined.”
