BATON ROUGE, La. (BRProud) – Southern University senior Corey Harris has received opportunities many don’t get while in college. Harris is currently interning for Microsoft which he got on his second try with help from one of his mentors.

“I was so happy. It got to a point where I was dreaming about it after my final round of interviews. When I got the email, I just finished up class and I thought I was going to pass out in the parking lot,” says Harris.

The finance major was selected among 41 other people out of thousands who applied for the internship. He said his interest came from numbers coming easy to him.

“It got to the point where I would do the math in my head, but I would get in trouble because I wouldn’t show my work.”

That smooth knowledge landed him not only one competitive internship in one year, but another that was actually offered to him from Meta for the Fall 2022 semester.

“That first week of Christmas, I got an email saying hey we’d like to reach out to you for a possible internship. That’s within supply chain at Meta within their new division for reality labs that handles virtual reality.”

Corey says Southern University helped him lay a foundation to go after what he wants and now gives advice to other students who want big tech internship.

“A lot of students I talk to want that quick fun and just want a big opportunity right out the gate. My advice is usually keep building, you’ll get it once you put the work in.”

As for Corey, he’s looking forward to his new opportunity with Meta and hopes to land a six-figure job within tech once he graduates.
