Street racing leads to chase and crash that killed 1, hurt 5

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A driver died and five passengers were hurt in a crash during a police chase in Louisiana while officers worked to disperse a large crowd suspected of participating in street racing.

LaKendrick O’Neal, 19, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree early Monday morning during the chase with Louisiana State Police in Shreveport, news outlets reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The five passengers who were injured ranged in age from 16 to 20, and their injuries were described as moderate to serious, according to news outlets.

Troopers said O’Neal sped away from the scene of the reported street racing, and officers were attempting to stop him.

It’s unclear whether anyone in the car was wearing a seat belt, police said. A toxicology sample was also collected. The crash remains under investigation.
