LAKE CHARLES, La. (BRPROUD) – A 16-year-old student was arrested after a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer got a whiff of marijuana.

CPSO says that smell was “coming from a group of students” outside LaGrange High School on Wednesday, August 17.

A search was conducted around 3 p.m. by the principal.

The search uncovered “a loaded firearm along with a small amount of marijuana inside a 16-year-old student’s backpack,” according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The teenager was taken into custody and charged with the crimes listed below:

  • Illegal carrying of a weapon in a firearm free zone
  • Possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone
  • Illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile
  • Possession of marijuana

At the time of the arrest, the 16-year-old was awaiting booking into the Juvenile Detention Center.
