PORT ALLEN, La. (BRPROUD) – September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

One local event is looking to bring attention to mental health.

The Suicide Awareness Walk starts at 6:15 p.m. in Port Allen.

Participants can run, walk or stroll to and from Jack’s Place.

The local night club located at 102 S Jefferson Ave. will act as the start and finish line for this event.

There is no sign up sheet and the event is free.

This is the first edition of the Suicide Awareness Walk and everyone is invited to bring attention to mental health.

If you are struggling, the National Alliance on Mental Illness is providing these avenues for those who are seeking help with mental illness:

  • If you are in crisis or are experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255)
  • If you’re uncomfortable talking on the phone, you can also text NAMI to 741-741 to be connected to a free, trained crisis counselor on the Crisis Text Line.
