BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A detective with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation after a recent rash of vehicle burglaries on North Mall Dr.

The initial investigation found that four vehicles had sustained damage at the Residence Inn and Courtyard by Marriott.

These incidents all happened on Tuesday, January 11 and left vehicles with shattered windows.

Further investigation found that on the same day, vehicles were burglarized in a similar fashion at the Cypress Lakes Apartments.

Evidence and information collected at that scene provided investigators with an important tip.

The same Dodge Challenger that was seen by a witness at the apartment complex was spotted nearby at a hotel.

The suspects in this case were apprehended and identified by a witness as the culprits in an attempted burglary at the apartment complex.

The suspects have been identified as Jaylon Nelson and Hykeen Staples.

A subsequent search of the Dodge Challenger uncovered a black wallet containing a social security card as well as bank cards.

Nelson and Staples are in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison facing Simple Burglary charges.
