BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A member of the Baton Rouge Police Department providing security at the Quality Inn Baton Rouge East I-12 was alerted to a suspicious incident Monday.

The incident took place around 1:10 a.m. on Monday, July 25 when a woman reported that someone was tampering with her vehicle, according to the affidavit.

The suspect was identified as Jeffrey Upkins, 41, of Baton Rouge.

Authorities said Upkins was found in an SUV that was located in the parking lot. The affidavit states that he had an active warrant through EBRSO. A search ensued which led to the discovery of a pistol, cocaine, marijuana, naproxen and a black pill which has yet to be identified by authorities.

The suspect insisted the that pistol and drugs did not belong to him.

Upkins remains behind bars in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and is facing charges of Illegal Carrying of Weapons (with CDS), Possession of Marijuana, and Fugitive Possession of Schedule II.

A bond has not been set for Upkins.
