BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) ––– September is Suicide Awareness Month, and The Louisiana Mental Health Association offers free follow-up care through the Fisher Project.

The Fisher Project often receives referrals after a hospital discharges a patient, but they can also be the first step in suicide prevention. “We are an additional support system to individuals receiving therapy, individuals who are seeing psychiatrists, or individuals who are having severe mental health issues,” explained Program Director Sondra Hayes.

As part of the project’s intake process, patients are assessed to determine their risk level before being matched with a peer support specialist for six months of weekly meetings.
