The search is on for Baton Rouge’s next Poet Laureate

The search is on for Baton Rouge’s next Poet Laureate.

The Baton Rouge Poet Laureate Program celebrates the city’s rich and diverse culture through the work of a poet who will represent Baton Rouge. The selection is being coordinated by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, under the direction of The Office of Mayor Sharon Weston-Broome.

“Whomever is chosen as Baton Rouge’s Poet Laureate will create excitement about poetry amongst the Capital Region through outreach, programs, teaching, and written work, ” a recent Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge press release stated. “This poet will serve a one-year term and is expected to develop a community outreach project in which they will share the art and love of poetry with a non-traditional and/or underserved audience.”

Submissions will be open from March 9 through March 21 for poets who are interested in serving as the city’s Poet Laureate. The submission guidelines, application requirements and the application form will be posted on the resource page of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge’s website on March 9. Find the website here.

Last year, Christian “Cubs The Poet” Davenport was selected to be the city’s Poet Laureate, his term will conclude in May of this year. Next term’s Poet Laureate will be announced in April at the Ebb & Flow Festival.
