BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Capital area first responders were called to the scene of an apartment fire on Greenwell Street near Winchester Avenue Sunday (December 4) afternoon.

Officials say the fire occurred at 5365 Greenwell Street and one person was injured in the incident.

First responders with the Baton Rouge Fire Department (BRFD), say it was shortly after 2 p.m. when they were called to the scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the dwelling’s front door.

No one was in the apartment, officials say.

However, a neighbor told firefighters someone left the apartment with unknown injuries and apparently made their way to a nearby hospital before emergency crews arrived on scene.

Multiple people were displaced in the fire, and the Red Cross has been called upon to assist these individuals.

BRFD says an investigator is still on the scene, as of 4:25 p.m., attempting to determine the fire’s cause.
