PIERRE PART, La. (BRPROUD) – A deputy with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on Thursday morning after witnessing a traffic violation.

The stop took place on LA 70 and two people were found in the vehicle.

Demetric Royal Nelson, Jr. was the driver and Malik Garrett, 27, of Baton Rouge was a passenger in the vehicle.

Both men were interviewed by the deputy and a request was put in for a K-9 unit.

The K-9 unit “conducted an open-air sniff of the suspect vehicle and alerted positive for the presence of controlled dangerous substances,” according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.

This led to a search of the vehicle.

APSO said, a “search of that vehicle resulted in the seizure of suspected illegal controlled dangerous substances.”

At the conclusion of the investigation, the passenger in the vehicle was arrested and charged with the crimes listed below:

  • Prohibited Acts – Schedule I Narcotics
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Malik Garrett remains behind bars in the Assumption Parish Detention Center and bond has not been set for the Baton Rouge man.

Demetric Royal Nelson, Jr. received tickets for these violations:

  • Expired Inspection Tag
  • Speeding

Nelson, Jr. was not taken into custody.
