PAINCOURTVILLE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office recently initiated a traffic stop on LA 70 East.

The traffic stop took place on Tuesday, November 15, after a deputy saw “an eastbound vehicle commit a traffic violation,” according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy spoke with each occupant including the driver, Rashonda R. Mitchell, 26, of Donaldsonville.

There were three people in the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop and they are identified below:

  • Rashonda R. Mitchell, 26, of Donaldsonville
  • Rance Mitchell, IV, 25, of, Donaldsonville
  • Taiwan Lavonta Caines, 27, of Baker

Investigators would later determine that Caines was a convicted felon.

APSO said, “The deputy noted a strong odor of suspected marijuana emitting from the vehicle.”

A K-9 was then asked to look for any drugs in the vehicle.

“The K-9 conducted an open-air sniff of the suspect vehicle and alerted positive for the presence of controlled dangerous substances,” according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.

A search of the vehicle uncovered suspected marijuana and two guns.

APSO said, “during the arrest and booking process, Rashonda R. Mitchell allegedly pushed one of the arresting officers,” according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office.

All three vehicle occupants ended up in the Assumption Parish Detention Center.

The charges and bond amount for all three individuals are provided below:

Rashonda R. Mitchell:

  • Battery of a Police Officer
  • Possession of Marijuana – First Offense
  • Obstruction of Justice
  • Speeding, 71/55 MPH
  • Use of Multiple Beam Road Lighting Equipment
  • Bond set at $10,000

Rance Mitchell, IV:

  • Obstruction of Justice
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Bond set at $5,000

Taiwan Lavonta Caines:

  • Illegal Carrying of Weapons
  • Possession of a Firearm or Carrying a Concealed Weapon by a Person Convicted of
    Domestic Abuse Battery
  • No bond set at this time

All three individuals remains behind bars on Friday morning.
