Trash pickup still an issue in East Baton Rouge, officials say more drivers to be hired

News

More than a month after Hurricane Barry, there are many complaints from residents about debris pickup even from one of the Metro Council members.

During Wednesday’s Metro Council meeting, representatives with DRC Emergency Services addressed council over those complaints.

Much of the council said they haven’t seen any changes.

Republic Services hired DRC to help with Barry storm cleanup.

DRC says they have been picking up debris, but have been behind schedule because of staffing.

Councilwoman Barbara Freiberg spoke from her own experience of what hasn’t been done.

“A stack that hasn’t been picked up in two weeks at my house. It’s not the size of a Volkswagen, but it could get there before they finish,” Freiberg says.

They added once the Republic issues are resolved, the other issues will go away.

DRC officials say 10 more drivers have been added and will train for the next six weeks.
