PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Troopers came to the rescue of an injured pelican that was stranded atop the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Thursday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the bird, which had injured wings, was spotted walking in the southbound travel lanes at about 5 p.m.

Troopers and Road Rangers arrived at the scene and were able to secure the pelican against a concrete barrier wall. The bird was taken to the South Skyway Fishing Pier and then to the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores, where it is being cared for by wildlife rescue professionals, the agency said.
