BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Give 365 BR and Mount Pleasant Baptist Church handed out free school supplies at the Baton Rouge Police Headquarters Saturday.

The 5th annual Back 2 School Extravaganza, hosted by Give 365 BR, had free health screenings, backpacks, COVID-19 vaccinations, food, entertainment, face painting, and educational pop-ups.

The group was founded by two registered nurses, Nadia Marcelin and Michelle Lewis. They say Give 365 BR’s mission is to help access necessary life supplies.

“Without the basic items, shelter, water, food, and clothing, you cannot function you can’t thrive,” Marcelin said.

The founders believe that kids in school will thrive better with the necessary items.

“With the rise in prices in school supplies, I mean definitely there’s a need out there and we recognize our families, they really need the help,” Lewis sad.

The Chaneyville Community Center and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church also hosted a school supply giveaway event to help the kids in their areas.

The Chaneyville group gave out over three hundred backpacks that were filled with supplies. The idea was created by principals in the area to make sure all needs were met.

Aleshia Taylor, a youth coordinator, said being able to grow up in the community and giving back filled her with joy.

“There’s everything in there from notebooks to composition books, crayons, markers, pencils,” Taylor said.

The Chaneyville community also distributed over 35 COVID-19 vaccines to children who were five and older.

“The more that we can get vaccinated with them it will help tremendously,” said Outreach Services Southeastern Community Health Systems Director, Nanette Bester.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office were at both events and shared how they plan on looking out for the children this school year.

“We’re prepared to go in and teach and to help them and to groom them into the future because they are our future and without them, there is no future,” said EBRSO Deputy, Donavon Sensley.

To make sure no school supply is wasted or unwanted, Taylor says that sometime next week they will be giving school supplies to the Northeast school students. As for Give 365 BR, any sponsor or donor will be a great help to continue their cause of helping the kids in the area.
