WDSU – Two men are recovering in New Orleans after clinging to the hull of their sinking boat in Joe’s Bay near Tiger Pass overnight Friday, according to the United States Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Sector New Orleans said it received a call for help from two men aboard a capsized vessel around 11 p.m. Friday.

Rescue teams, including a response boat from Venice and a helicopter from New Orleans, responded.

The Coast Guard said the air crew first spotted the men in the water just before midnight and hoisted them to safety.

“Life-threatening situations can happen without warning on the water, but there are things you can do to increase your chances of survival,” said Scott Talbot, a search and rescue mission coordinator at Sector New Orleans. “One of the easiest things you can do to keep yourself safe is wear a life jacket. If your vessel capsizes, staying near the vessel increases the likelihood search crews will locate you.”

The men were brought to the air station in New Orleans in stable condition, according to the Coast Guard.
