HAMMOND, La. (WDSU) — An 18-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with an overnight vehicle pursuit in Hammond that left a Louisiana State Police trooper in critical condition, officials said.

Nathan Anding, 18, was arrested Thursday afternoon with the help of several area law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force and the Department of Homeland Security, the Hammond Police Department said in an update.

Investigators said Anding was booked into the jail on charges of obstruction of justice, hit and run, negligent injury, driving without a license and other charges related to the pursuit that occurred after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Taylor Cox, 26, the woman Anding was with, was arrested Wednesday on similar charges.

A spokesperson for Hammond police said the chase began when an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot in the 2700 block of W. Thomas Street.

The officer tried to pull over the driver of the vehicle who then took off a high rate of speed, officials said. The officer noticed the people in the car throwing things out from both sides, indicated that there were at least two people inside, according to the update.

Several other Hammond police officers joined the pursuit as it moved out of city limits, investigators said. The state troopers then joined the police officers several miles into the pursuit as it occurred on Wardline Road.

The troopers used a tire deflation device near the intersection at Kate Street to stop the vehicle. The vehicle’s tires were disabled and when two of the troopers went to retrieve the deflation device, they were struck by the Hammond police officer’s unit also involved in the chase, officials said.

One trooper has been treated and released with minor injuries. The second trooper, George Baker, remains in critical condition at this time, according to LSP PIO Trooper Jeremy Price.

After the tires were disabled, the car crashed on Wardline Road at its intersection with Crapanzano Road. The individuals who were in the vehicle fled the scene.

Cox and Anding were later identified and taken into custody.

Additional details were not released.
