BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – From the moment you walk into Gov’t Taco in Baton Rouge’s mid city neighborhood, you can tell it’s not politics as usual.
“We definitely want this to be different, we want this to be unique” said Chef Jay Ducote. “We want people to step in and feel like they are no place else, they know they’re at Gov’t Taco”.
Voters have overwhelmingly approved Chef Jay Ducote’s Gov’t Taco, which opens it’s first brick and mortar location Tuesday; one of the most patriotic days of the year.
“Gov’t Taco, it’s taco Tuesday and it’s Election Day; no better time to open and feed people some tacos and margaritas then right now” said Ducote.
On the heels of his food network debut and nationwide success, Chef Jay Ducote opened Gov’t Taco in 2018. At the time, it was one of the flagship concepts in Baton Rouge’s White Star Market; but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the market to close in March. The closure only propelled Ducote’s decision to run and his campaign to open his first restaurant moved into high gear.
“Just planning on how we’re spacing our tables and how we’re trying to put a tent in the parking lot so people can sit outside… all of that’s just different right now” Ducote said. “But I don’t know any other way. So we’re just rolling with the punches and excited to bring Gov’t Taco back to Baton Rouge”.
While it’s much of the same Gov’t Taco the Capital City has come to love, there are some political bombshells and twists to the menu.
“It’s fast casual, so the food part of it is you come in, you order at the counter, you go grab your table, we’ll bring your food to you, just like you would at a bbq joint in Texas” Ducote explained. “We have a full bar with beer, wine, margaritas, palomas and specialty cocktails those are available all day long… I feel like we’ve built an atmosphere, especially at night, that’s going to turn into a really cool bar scene and the tacos and queso will be good snacks while you’re drinking” he said.
In a year where the political stakes are higher than ever, Ducote’s decision to keep Gov’t Taco along Government Street in Baton Rouge was a no-brainer.
“Government street really is that destination and it’s one of the reasons why we created Gov’t Taco in the first place in White Star and it’s one of the main reasons why we really wanted to look at staying on Government when we moved into our brick and mortar restaurant” he said.
Gov’t Taco is located at 5621 Government Street. They open to the public Tuesday, November 3.
