Uniquely Baton Rouge: Little free library coming to Millennial Park, aimed at inspiring youth literacy

News

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) At Millennial Park, crews are busy adding the finishing touches on something new for the community.

“It’s huge” said developer and owner Cameron Jackson. “It’s just another thing that people can come and do; and that was my main thing.

Jackson is talking about the park’s newest attraction; a little free library, which Jackson says is the largest in Louisiana.

“It’s take a book, read a book” Jackson said. “Take a book, leave a book concept, yes. Just like all the other little free libraries” he said.

But unlike other little free libraries popping up across the country, the one at Millennial Park is made possible in part through a partnership between Jackson and VIPS, Volunteers in Public Schools. Jackson hopes the library and the new partnership can help inspire literacy among young people.

“We’ll be doing a lot of different things with art classes, music classes” Jackson explained. “We’ll be having them come and having entrepreneur nights, having different professions come and talk to the kids here at Millennial Park to kind of get them and to show them different ways and avenues that they can go into to get their careers and things like that” Jackson said.

Millennial Park is already home to a number of shipping container based businesses like Jive Turkey, Memphis Mac and the Daq Spot. In February, Millennial Park owners will go before the East Baton Rouge Metro Council in efforts to rezone in able to serve alcohol.

Jackson hopes with all of the additions, including the little free library, the open air dining and entertainment concept will become a venue for the entire family.

“You don’t have to go to the library and be all bored” explained Jackson. “You can come out here, eat, read, listen to some music and have a good time and do it in a place that’s different and cool at the same time” he said.

Millennial Park is located at 3817 Florida Street.
