BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — One of the top haunted houses in the nation, 13th Gate Haunted House has been scaring people for the past 23 years in Baton Rouge.
The 40,000 square-foot facility has 13 indoor and outdoor Halloween themes.
The owner of 13th Gate Haunted House, Dwayne Sanburn, says this year has upped the ante compared to the other years.
“Very scary,” said Sanburn, “a lot of this has turned upside, that’s all I’m going to say.”
The 13th Gate Haunted House is a year-round operation for him. They build new themes and create costumes yearly.
“You know, I create a lot of the characters,” says Sanburn, “but the makeup team just takes it to another level.”
The head of the makeup department, Sarah Brown, has been with the company for 15 years.
“Really anything I can put blood on too, I’m with it,” said Brown “We have about a hundred people to get down in two hours; we have to categorize the characters.”
Brown said she has nine makeup artists, working on over 100 actors and actresses in less than 15 minutes each. That includes hair and makeup.
One of the actresses, Alyssa Haddox, has been auditioning for a role for the past five years. She feels fulfillment “screaming” at people.
“I mean, it’s what keeps me coming back, to just this haunted house,” says Haddox “It’s one of the best haunted houses in the nation. I think we’re doing something different that stands out to me.”
