ZACHARY, La. (BRPROUD) – On Monday, students returned to Northwestern Elementary School for their first day of school.

For the students, a new school year probably brought uncertainty, anxiety and excitement.

That is especially true for those entering Kindergarten.

One local school went out of their way to help the new students with a ‘sweet surprise.”

That ‘sweet surprise’ was a reading of the book, “A Letter From Your Teacher: On the First Day of School,” by Shannon Olson.

According to the school, “the idea of this book stemmed from a “Book Talk” our Librarian, Ms. Rebecca Gerdes did with our faculty. Dr. Alicia Monroe, our music teacher, was gracious enough to video each teacher during our professional days before students came back.”

Everyone in the video is a teacher at Northwestern Elementary School.

Laurie Condon is a Teacher of Instructional Support for Zachary Community Schools and she expresses what I think everyone hopes for this year:

“Our teachers and staff wish our students (past and present) a healthy, joyful year full of new experiences that challenge all of us to grow, learn and become better humans.”
