WATCH: A high school graduate is breaking barriers

A local high school student is making history in his family.

Oakwood Adventist Academy Senior, DeAndre Matthews, accepted his diploma today, and he’s the first one in his family to do it.

Throughout high school, if DeAndre wasn’t playing basketball, he was doing homework. Today, he was recognized for graduating with honors. He plans to continue his education and go to college.

DeAndre’s mother, Charese Matthews, said, “He’s setting new goals for his baby brother here who will be coming behind him two years later and also other family members and people in the community who never dreamed to be in this moment right here.”

DeAndre says his mom pushed him to do well in school and graduate high school on time.

“I mainly did it for her. Mainly because she raised me 18 years of my life by herself, no help, things like that, so even though I don’t like school, I can do it for her,” said DeAndre.

After the graduation ceremony, DeAndre was offered a $30,000 scholarship to Oakwood University. He still hasn’t decided exactly what college he will attend, but he says he plans to study engineering.
