BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Senate Select Committee on State Police Oversight is meeting on Monday, January 24.

The meeting began with Louisiana State Police Commission Executive Director Jason Hannaman describing how the Louisiana State Police Commission came into existence after being asked by Representative Franklin J Foil.

There are seven members on the commission including six appointed members and one elected member.

Senator Fields says Louisiana is the only state with a separate civil service commission.

Colonel Lamar Davis stepped up to speak a little before 11 a.m.

Senator Fields states that public safety needs its own department.

Members of the public then came forward to speak in front of the committee.

Mr. Robert Burns from Sound Off Louisiana says the problem with the state commission is that it is way too political.

Belinda Parker-Brown, CEO, of Louisiana United International said that we want these matters taken care of right now.

This comes after Colonel Lamar Davis and other Louisiana State Police leaders met with legislators at the State Capitol last month.
