WATCH: State leaders gathering to start the deepening of the Mississippi River Deep Draft Channel

NEW ORLEANS, La. (BRPROUD) – State leaders are gathering on the edge of the Mississippi River to talk about and begin an upcoming construction project.

At 10 a.m., Maj. Gen. Diana Holland, Commanding General, Mississippi Valley Division and Col. Stephen Murphy, Commander, New Orleans District are joining Governor John Bel Edwards at a 10 a.m. news conference.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a document will be signed on Friday morning which will allow for the beginning of the “construction effort to deepen the existing Mississippi River Ship Channel from the Gulf of Mexico to Baton Rouge, La., from a depth of 45 feet to 50 feet.”

The event is taking place at the New Orleans District Headquarters located at 7400 Leake Ave.
