A scam run on more than 100 Wells Fargo customers in Virginia appears to have hit a Florida woman.
Darlene Kaniadakis, of St. Petersburg, says she spotted a charge for $14.06 to Amazon on her debit card over the weekend.
She contacted her bank, Wells Fargo, and was told it was for a membership fee for Amazon Prime.
Kaniadakis says she is not a member and had not ordered anything.
“I knew it was fraud,” she said.
Kaniadakis was given a new debit card but the charge still went through on the new card. So she knew she’d Better Call Behnken.
What happened to Kaniadakis is strikingly similar to a recent issue reported in Virginia.
More than 100 customers there reported fraudulent charges and nearly all of them were for around $14.
A Wells Fargo spokesman says the bank was able to stop the fraud and issue customers new cards.
“We found a resolution on the security side,” the spokeswomen said.
Kaniadakis says she received a new debit card and thought her problem was taken care of but discovered Tuesday that the charge went through, and her statement reads that it is “recurring.”
After calls from Better Call Behnken, she received a phone call from Wells Fargo, vowing to take care of the charges.
It is still unclear how this happened in Virginia or to Kaniadakis’ account.
News Channel 8 viewers commented on the Better Call Behnken Facebook page and say they, too, have seen mysterious Amazon charges show up on their bank statements.
Some are customers of other banks.
Both Wells Fargo and Amazon say they are looking into this situation.
