Workout Wednesday: Y-Lift, YMCA new program for beginners

News

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) – The YMCA is rolling out a new program to help beginners get comfortable and confident in the weight room.

When you walk into the gym do you feel overwhelmed? If the answer is yes, the YMCA has a program just for you.

“We are very excited to get Y-Lift going. We’ve done one session, and it’s been unbelievably successful. It is the why and the how of strength training,” said Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery.

Y-Lift is a 12 week program created for true beginners.

“If you’ve never worked out with weights before, whether it be machines or free weights, this is an amazing place to start. You’re in a small group of like-minded people, and you’re under the guidance of a personal trainer.”

Many beginners are scared of getting hurt. This class helps take that fear away.

“A lot of people that are new to the gym, or that haven’t exercised in a long time really don’t know where to start. They are most nervous about not knowing the right form and being at risk for injury. This is a way to learn how to increase your muscle mass, increase your bone density, in a very safe way, and being under the guidance of a personal trainer.”

You’ll also learn how to create a workout.

“The whole program is focused on the education. Not just how to do the exercises, but how to put them together. Why is it important to do upper body and lower body on the same day, and why is it important to do a certain number of repetitions.”

If you’re nervous about getting started, remember you’re not alone.

“You are meeting people that are in your same shoes. They are a little hesitant and a little uncomfortable, but coming together as a group, and really learning the why’s and the how’s, really catapults you to be successful.”
