BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards says Senator John Kennedy’s ‘call a crackhead‘ ad is one that could have been done better, even though he understands the point he was trying to make.

Kennedy recently released the ad as part of his re-election campaign for the U.S. Senate seat. In the ad talking about rising crime rates, Kennedy says, “If you hate cops just because they’re cops, the next time you’re in trouble, call a crackhead.”

Edwards says he gets the point Kennedy was trying to make, but there was a better way to do it.

“I don’t believe in defunding the police, and that’s not what we’ve done in Louisiana. I support law enforcement. I come from a line of law enforcement. I believe crime is too high. You can make all of those points, and I think 98% of the people will agree with you. So there was probably a better way for him to do it” said Edwards.

Kennedy is facing several challenges, including Democrats Gary Chambers and Luke Mixon. Edwards has already announced his endorsement of Mixon in the U.S. Senate race.

Election day is Nov. 8, and early voting begins on Oct. 25.
