An unrestrained Zachary driver died after losing control of his car and running into a tree in East Feliciana Parish Sunday afternoon.

According to Louisiana State Police, 37-year-old Melvin Bates was killed shortly after 3 p.m. on December 30th.

Investigators determined the crash occurred as Bates was driving his 20212 Honda Accord eastbound on LA Hwy 10.

For unknown reasons, we’re told his Honda veered off the road and hit a tree.

Bates did not have on his seat belt at the time of the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Impairment is unknown at this time, but may have been a factor. A toxicology sample was obtained from Bates and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
