Zachary Police officials say they’re used to seeing a rise in break-ins during the summer months, but even they are surprised by a recent string of burglaries in the city.
Investigators say nearly three dozen cars were burglarized Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the Police Chief is begging the people of Zachary to be more vigilant.
“We usually in a month have one to five in a month’s time,” Chief David McDavid said. “We had thirty in June. Usually we have one to two, maybe three. So far we’ve had one this month plus the 33 that happened last night.”
McDavid says most of the cars weren’t forcibly opened, they were either left unlocked or the keys were left inside. The chief says this is common behavior for the people who live here.
“I’m frustrated. We’ve asked the people of Zachary to take your keys. Take your keys and hide your belongings. We’ve put this campaign out for months, for a year now. We’ve got signs throughout the neighborhoods.”
