BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board put off its selection of a new redistricting firm after the original pick, Strategic Demographics quit last week.
The redistricting process uses 2020 census data to carve out a map intended to help better represent the community.
Board member Dawn Collins says it’s crucial for the community.
“Everyone should care because education is the number one driver of economic development but in particular parishes should definitely care because again you need to, you need to know that you’ll have adequate representation on the board of people can hear and relate to your voice,” said Dawn Collins EBRP School Board Member.
The board will vote to award a new firm a contract in their next board meeting on November 18.
The two remaining contenders are Data Center and Geographic Planning & Demographic Services.
Redistricting is required every ten years so school board members are working hard to get someone in place to meet their June deadline.
