Baton Rouge, LA – Every year before the season starts, crowds gather at Southern’s campus for Fan Fest. A full scrimmage at A.W. Mumford Stadium is the first look the public gets at the team after an entire summer of workouts and a few weeks of fall camp.
This year is special, as it’s a preview at what the Jags are capable of in Eric Dooley’s up tempo offense.
Dooley gave the keys to starting quarterback BeSean McCray, and he immediately began driving down field. The JuCo transfer found open receivers all over.
The standout: Baton Rouge native and former Zachary Bronco star, Chandler Whitfield.
He hauled in two long passes, taking one of them for a touchdown, in addition to a number of shorter quick passes. He also found himself handling punt return duties, as he prepares for a big redshirt-junior season.
“When you practice hard like that during the week, Saturday should be easy for you,” Dooley said. “So that guy putting in the work and the timing, and it’s paying off.”
Whitfield praised the rest of the receiving group, saying they are full of playmakers.
“We just try to take top off every chance we get. We just trying to take the top off, trying to go deep, trying to score points fast.” Whitfield said.
