Baton Rouge, La. – Former LSU men’s golfers Sam Burns and Luis Gagne will tee it up at the 121st United States Open Championship this week, June 17-20 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California.
Burns will play in his third U.S. Open and first since 2018 by being among the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 24. He broke through for his first PGA Tour win on May 2 at the Valspar Championship, edging Keegan Bradley by three strokes. The former Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year in college registered his first professional victory at the 2018 Savannah (Ga.) Golf Championship on the Web.com Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour). He turned professional in 2017 after a stellar amateur career that included four victories, including the 2017 NCAA Baton Rouge Invitational. Represented the USA on the 2017 Palmer Cup Team and later that summer tied for sixth in the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship as an amateur. He also represented his country in the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup.
Gagne qualified for his third U.S. Open in the Jupiter Hills, Fla., final qualifier conducted at The Bear’s Club a few weeks back.. In 2018, he shared low-amateur honors with 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Matt Parziale at Shinnecock Hills. While he was born in Costa Rica, Gagne attended high school in Orlando, Fla. He was the runner-up to Alvaro Ortiz in the 2019 Latin America Amateur Championship in the Dominican Republic. He qualified for a pair of U.S. Junior Amateurs and reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills. He fell in the Round of 32 of the 2018 U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. Gagne now competes on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.
Burns will go off at 4:09 p.m. CT on Thursday afternoon before teeing it up at 10:24 a.m. CT on Friday morning. Gagne has tee times of 4:42 p.m. CT (Thursday) and 10:57 a.m. CT (Friday).
