BATON ROUGE, LA – LSU juniors Zack Mathis and Saul Garza are headed for Major League Baseball. Mathis will sign a contract with the San Diego Padres and Garza with the Kansas City Royals.
With this year’s new MLB draft rules, undrafted free agents can only sign for up to $20,000.
In the shortened 2020 season, Mathis was the starting third baseman, batting .262 in 17 games with one double, one triple, one homer, and nine RBI.
Garza started and played in 14 games, batting .229. He led the squad in home runs, and he was tied for the team lead in RBI.
Mathis says he intends to officially sign a contract with the Padres tomorrow.
The two juniors join LSU teammates RHP Cole Henry and OF Daniel Cabrera at the next level who were drafted last week.
