Baton Rouge, La. – Mondo Duplantis has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association Division I National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday morning.

Duplantis became the second-best collegiate pole vaulter outdoors with a world-leading clearance of 19’ 5.75” (5.94 meters) on Saturday at the LSU Invitational. The clearance of 19’ 5.75” broke his own Bernie Moore Track Stadium facility record and made him the NCAA leader in the pole vault for the 2019 season. The mark moved him from No. 3 on the LSU outdoor list to No. 1 as he surpassed Russ Buller (18’ 8.75”/2000) and his dad, Greg (18’ 5.25”/1986), for the best mark in school history.

Duplantis now ranks as the No. 2 pole vaulter outdoors in NCAA history behind Tennessee’s Lawrence Johnson. The collegiate record was set by Johnson back in 1996 when he cleared 5.98 meters (19’ 7.50”). Duplantis gave the collegiate record a go with three attempts at 6.01 meters (19’ 8.50”), but was unsuccessful at that height. Duplantis cleared bars of 5.46 meters (17’ 11”), 5.51 meters (18’ 1”), 5.61 meters (18’ 4.75”), 5.67 meters (18’ 7.25”), 5.71 meters (18’ 8.75”), and 5.83 meters (19’ 1.50”) before he eventually eclipsed 5.94 meters. Duplantis passed Shawn Barber (Akron/2015) on the NCAA all-time list by one inch; Barber was a 2015 finalist for The Bowerman.

It was Duplantis’ second-best ever clearance only trailing his world all-time No. 2 outdoor clearance of 6.05 meters (19’ 10.25”) that he cleared at the 2018 European Championships to claim gold. The gold medal at the European Championships made him the youngest male athlete to win a field event title in European Championships history.

Duplantis is the third LSU male athlete to receive this honor outdoors. He joins the likes of Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake (2016) and Vernon Norwood (2015) as previous LSU winners. The only Lady Tiger to have won USTFCCCA Outdoor Athlete of the Week honors is Aleia Hobbs who achieved the feat twice in 2017. Duplantis also won this award once during the indoor season.
