Next man up: LSU running backs have to fill John Emery void

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU lost running back John Emery for the 2021 season. During Monday’s presser, head coach Ed Orgeron announced the junior became academically ineligible and will not play the remainder of the year.

The Tigers backfield still has fellow junior Ty Davis-Price, but freshmen Armoni Goodwin and Corey Kiner, also known as Thunder and Lightning, will have to fill the hole Emery leaves behind.

“I do believe that they do need to touch the ball more, and that’s the same thing I saw in camp. Those guys are dynamite, man. I think that both of them going be great backs,” Orgeron said.

Coach O said Goodwin has become questionable for Saturday’s game versus Central Michigan. The freshman suffered an apparent injury against McNeese, but ball carriers aren’t the main issue for LSU’s ground game. The offensive line continued to struggle run blocking against the Cowboys.

Chemistry has been the unit’s issue, but injuries have played a factor in the line’s cohesiveness. Orgeron said guard Chasen Hines will play Saturday. However, right tackle Austin Deculus was a “maybe,” and left tackle Cam Wire will not play against the Chippewas.

“I do believe the offensive line has to gel. We have to help them out. The offense is not performing how we want to perform right now. That’s obvious. I got to do a better job coaching. We gotta get some things wrinkled out, get ’em fixed up, and I think we will do that,” Orgeron added.

After two weeks, LSU has averaged 2.87 yards per carry.
