PONCHATOULA, La. – The Green Wave have not been to a state championship game since 1951, and when the semifinal matchup kicked off against Acadiana, Ponchatoula’s hopes slowly dimmed.

The Rams scored on their opening possession, and the seventh ranked 5A team did three consecutive onside kicks in the first half.

However, the Green Wave survived the Rams stampede.

Ponchatoula allowed 29 first half points and Acadiana held an eight point lead at the break. The defense stopped the bleeding after halftime and didn’t allow another touchdown until the fourth quarter.

Jacoby Matthews highlighted the Green Wave’s second-half defensive dominance with a scoop and score to give Ponchatoula its final touchdown of the game.

Ponchatoula won 43-36 and will face No. 1 Zachary in the 5A Championship Game.
