METAIRIE, La. (BRPROUD) – Baton Rouge native and Saints defensive lineman Malcolm Roach is coming into his own during training camp.
Now entering his fourth NFL season, Roach is focusing on his explosive moves off the ball and it shows.
The former Madison Preparatory Academy standout is consistently making plays in practice and preseason games and Roach feels he’s the best he’s ever been.
“I feel like I’m coming to my best self mentally, physically,” Roach said. “I feel like I’m getting to that point, but it’s not even like a point. I just feel like I’m like I want to say like, you grew up and experience life and things like that, things slowing down.”
“For me, the game slowed down a lot. Real life just out there, making plays and being in the backfield, strike and block, knowing how to react to blocks and seeing these blocks over the years so many times that I kind of know what blocks how to react to it and things like that without thinking about it,” Roach said.
“I think he’s had a good camp,” Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen said. “I think he’s he’s a lot more sudden and explosive than maybe where he’s been at in years past. So that’s been good to see.”
Roach joked that he believes he’s the most athletic interior defensive lineman among his teammates, noting he was also a very good linebacker back in the day.
